It has proved interesting in my classes to have the class examine the various ways in which George and Martha, trapped in their house and their life together, attempt to find substitutes for the reallity they have been trying to escape and deny, and then to have the students look closely at what happens at the end, after Nick and Honey leave, and George and Martha are left, after "exorcising" Sunny Jim, with the reality they so feared, and that reality turns out to be marked by many affirmations (the many "yes's" in the dialogue) and the morning sun illuminating the real world they now must face together, alone. Of course, the ultimate sense one gets from this scene is "maybe" rather than "yes," but at least there is some hope.
